This semester, I wanted to try something a
little different for my Collo hours. My goal for this semester is to do a
couple small projects to fill my hour requirement for this class. One of the
ideas that I wanted to work on was starting an ETSU yard sale page on Facebook.
My home community has several: “Tri-cities Yard Sale,” “Sullivan County Yard
Sale,” etc. It is basically a marketplace for everyone who lives in the
specified area to have an opportunity to sell their stuff and buy new stuff
from other people in the group. The group founder does not receive any monetary
profits from the page, however, they do get to decide who is allowed to be in
the group and determine whether something is acceptable to be posted (they can
delete it if it is not appropriate and before it is actually put on the page
for others to see).
This sounds like an easy feat, but in order to do this, I will
first need to speak to members of administration including Dr. Noland and possibly
Student Government. I can even start with my Collo professor to see if he knows
what chain of command I should follow. After doing this, I will have to speak
to one of the owners of the pages I am a part of in order to learn how it needs
to be set up. I will then have to reach out to ETSU students and attempt to get
them on board with the idea and wanting to join the group. These pages are
extremely popular in my hometown (one of the pages has 37,000 members and
another has 73,000). Also, on a regular basis, I hear or am asked via group
messages if anyone is interested in buying something (table, chairs, blankets, books,
etc.) from another student because they are moving, they don’t need it anymore,
etc. Therefore, I feel as though this may be a beneficial resource for students
who are a part of the ETSU Buccaneer Family.
I also plan on trying to learn how to play the piano. I have
wanted to play since I was little, and I used to love banging on my cousin’s
keyboard. I actually received one as a gift for Christmas last year, and it has
a list of settings to choose from. I have no experience with reading music or
playing music (excluding the plastic recorders we had to use in elementary
school --- even though I could play a mean “Hot Cross Buns”), but it has always
been something I have wanted to learn. I have no illusion that I will become Beethoven
by the end of the semester, but I do hope to be able to play a few lullabies
and such. I will keep everyone posted on how that goes as well.
Thank you for reading my blog, and I hope to make the posts for
this semester interesting and informative.
